William T. Bly Sr.

William T. Bly, Sr., 82, of Ashley, passed away following a brief illness on Tuesday, February 12, 2019.
Born June 4, 1936 in Ashley he was the youngest son of the twelve children of the late Malachi and Emily Smith Bly.
Bill was a 1955 graduate of Saint Leo's High School where he was involved in many school activities as a member of the basketball and baseball teams and student council. Later in life, he continued his education at Luzerne County Community College.
From 1955 to 1959 he served with the US Navy on the Mediterranean. S1 William T. Bly served as a Side Boy Honor Guard on the 6th Fleet Flagship, the USS Newport News.
Bill and his high school sweetheart, Mary Clarke, were married in the Church of Saint Leo the Great on December 1, 1956. Together they celebrated sixty-two years of marriage.
Bill worked for Eberhard Faber and Phillips Lighting in Mountain Top before retiring.
Bill was a lifelong member of the Parish of Saint Leo the Great and a member of its retreat group. A founding member and one-time president of its school booster club, he also coached biddy and high school basketball at Saint Leo's.
A daughter-in-law, Kathleen Yencha Bly; sisters, Mary Rable, Catherine Rable, Emily Stoodley, Julie Malesky and Nellie Makavensky; and brothers, Malachi, Michael, Joseph and Eugene Bly preceded him in death.
Bill will be greatly missed by his wife, Mary; children, William, Jr., Donald (Luann), Eugene (Lisa), Mary Kay (Bernie Gavlick), and Beth Ann (Mike Connelly); ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Anna Kaminski and Margaret Kopiak; sisters-in-law, Florence and Arlene Bly; nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Celebration of William's Life will begin Sunday with visitation from 4 to 7 PM at McLaughlin's, 142 South Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre and continue there on Monday with gathering at 9 AM followed by a Funeral Mass to be celebrated by his nephew, Father Brian Clarke, at 10 AM in the Church of Saint Leo the Great. Interment with military honors will be in Saint Mary's Cemetery.
