Samuel J. Mangino
October 19, 1924 — January 3, 2014
Samuel J. Mangino, 89, a longtime resident of Hanover Township passed away Friday.
Born October 19, 1924 in West Wyoming he was a son of the late Louis and Grace Greco Mangino.
An Army veteran of World War II he proudly served our country in several battles in Germany.
Sam worked at the Loomis Colliery before taking a position as an electrician at Tobyhanna Army Depot. He was a quality assurance inspector at the time of his retirement.
Sam was a true Penn State fan throughout his life and enjoyed tailgating at the games for many years. He played football at West Wyoming High School and shared his stories many times over. He had a passion for gardening and a knack for growing some of the best tomatoes in the valley.
Sam was a member of the Bishop William J. Hafey Assembly, Fourth Degree, Knights of Columbus Council 302 in Wilkes-Barre.
His wife, whom he loved and missed dearly, Eleanor Dunsavage Mangino passed away January 30, 2012. Sisters, Grace Calcara and Betty Reilly also preceded him in death.
Sam’s entire family is thankful for the Geisinger Health System, particularly his physician, Aliasgar Chittalia, MD and his staff, with whom he shared many of his tomatoes, for their care and kindness over the years, and for the staff at Golden Living Center – East Mountain who lovingly cared for him in his final months.
He will be missed by his family who will carry forward many fond memories, including his sons, Louis and his wife Diane Mangino of Plains and Peter and his wife Maureen Mangino of Nanticoke; grandson, Louis C. Mangino; granddaughters, Kara Mangino, Kim Jukes and Jamie Mangino; and brother, Bert and his wife Jeannie Mangino of Swoyersville.
Friends and family are invited to join in the celebration of a Funeral Mass on Tuesday at 9:30 AM in the Church of Saint Nicholas. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carverton.
Visitation will be held beginning Tuesday at 8:30 AM at McLaughlin's - The Family Funeral Service, 142 South Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre.
Memorial donations are preferred and may be made to Saint Nicholas Capital Campaign Fund, 226 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701-2897.
