Joseph P. Brennan

Joseph P Brennan, 87 of Shavertown passed away unexpectedly at his home on February 28th.
Born August 5, 1927 in Wilkes-Barre he was a son of the late Joseph A. and Helen Jackles Brennan.
Joe was a 1945 graduate of GAR High School where he played varsity baseball and football and was senior class vice president.
He enlisted and served with the US Navy after graduation and was discharged shortly after WWII.
He earned his degree in commerce and finance in 1950 from Wilkes University.
Nicknamed ‘Red’ he was captain of the Wilkes baseball team beginning his freshman year, playing under George Ralston.
His career in sales took Joe and his family to Allentown and Wayne, Pennsylvania. After studying at the Wharton School in Philadelphia, he was a licensed stock broker and went to work for the firm Butcher and Singer, eventually returning to the Wyoming Valley to manage their Wilkes-Barre office. There he was instrumental in directing bond issues for local municipal and private development projects. As a financial advisor, he served many local clients until his retirement from Wells Fargo in 2011.
Joe was a past member of Fox Hill Country Club and the Wilkes-Barre Kiwanis Club. He was also a former board member of the Visiting Nurses Association.
Joe’s hobbies included being an avid reader and a supporter of the Back Mountain Library. He was a keen bridge player, belonged to the Thursday men’s bridge club at Irem Temple Country Club and enjoyed thoroughbred handicapping. His in depth knowledge and passion for baseball made watching a game with him something special.
He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty years, Gloria, daughter Kathleen, and brother, Malcolm.
He will be greatly missed by his sons Robert of Fairfax, California, Dr. Timothy and wife Gerri of Annville and his daughters, Patricia and husband Joshua Bryant of Dallas and Terri Brennan of Brooklyn, New York; ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Celebration of Joe’s Life will begin Thursday with visitation from 5 to 8 PM at McLaughlin’s, 142 South Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre. Funeral Mass will be held Friday at 10 AM in the Church of Saint Therese in Shavertown. Burial will be in Saint Mary’s Cemetery.
Contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to the Back Mountain Memorial Library and the Back Mountain Regional Fire and EMS.
