James C. Horn

d. April 21, 2017

James C. Horn, 67, of Long Neck, Delaware died on April 21 in the Neighborhood Hospice in West Chester surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 11, 1949, in Wilkes-Barre to Anne Marie Horn and the late George Horn.

Jim married his grade school sweetheart, Sharon Meehan, and they enjoyed a wonderful forty-five years of marriage. He and Sharon raised their three daughters in Toms River, NJ: Maura Horn and husband Ron Leonesio of Louisville, CO, Kerry Duffy and husband Thomas Duffy of Thornton, and Caitlin Sontowski and husband John Sontowski of Aston.

Jim was a graduate of Saint Mary’s High School and received a BS from King’s College and an MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He worked for thirty-three years as an Accountant/Financial Manager for the Federal Government at Fort Monmouth, NJ. Jim spent fourteen years coaching his daughters in the Toms River Girls Softball League, and was active in the charitable work of the Toms River chapters of the Lions Club and Elks Club for twenty years.

After retirement, Jim and Sharon moved to a picturesque golf community in southern Delaware, Baywood Greens. He loved his time there, enjoying lots of pool time with many new friends, golfing with the Indian River and Baywood Golf Leagues, community trivia nights, pot lucks and happy hours, and lots of time on golf cart rides with his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Jim will be remembered for his contagious smile and his welcoming personality. He lived his life to the fullest and loved to travel with his wife, family, and friends. They camped along the East Coast for many years, and have recently enjoyed so many nice trips including Caribbean and European cruises, a trip to Alaska and several trips to his beloved Ireland to see extended family. Family was always first and foremost with Jim, and he loved tracing back his genealogy and building his Family Tree for future generations.

Jim had five grandchildren that will miss him greatly: Bridget, Brendan and Shane Duffy, and Molly and Keira Sontowski. He was a wonderful, fun PopPop who attended baseball and soccer games, dance recitals and plays. He was always happy to take his grandchildren on golf cart rides to Uncle Willy’s and fishing for golf balls.

Jim is also survived by a large, very close extended family: his brother Neil Horn and wife Mel, his sisters Molly Middleton and husband Joe, Kathy McGlynn and husband Pat, Eileen Siock and husband Bob, sister-in-law Michele d’Arcy and husband Tom, brother-in-law Michael Meehan and wife Gladys Stiles, sister-in-law Colleen DeGroodt and husband Pat, and sister-in-law Maureen Krauss and husband Jim.

The celebration of Jim’s life will begin Thursday, April 27th with visitation from 5 to 8 PM at McLaughlin’s, 142 South Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre, and continue Friday with gathering beginning at 9 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 AM Friday in the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, 13 Hudson Road in Plains. Interment will be private at Saint Mary's Cemetery.

Memorial donations are preferred and may be made to Neighborhood Hospice, West Chester, Pa ( https://www.chestercountyhospital.org/services-and-treatments/home-care-and-hospice-neighborhood-health/gift-giving ) or Toms River Lions Club, PO Box 1390, Toms River, NJ 08754.
