Bernard T. Suda

June 3, 1939 — January 15, 2009

Bernard T. ‘Bear’ Suda, 69, of Exeter Township and a former long-time resident of the Rolling Mill Hill section of Wilkes-Barre died Thursday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born June 3, 1939 in Wilkes-Barre he was a son of the late Ignatius and Julia Nowinski Suda.

A member of the Class of 1957 of G.A.R. Memorial High School, Bernie was a member of the varsity football and wrestling teams. It was there that he met the love of his life, Grace Weber and, together, they celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary on 22 November.

Bernie was a proud member of the United States Marine Corps Reserve.

In 1965 he joined the City of Wilkes-Barre Bureau of Fire. A brave and dedicated fire fighter, he worked his way through the ranks of Captain, Fire Inspector and Line Chief. He was in charge of the entire department as Fire Chief upon retirement in 1999.

Bernie was member of Saint Nicholas Parish and the Harvey’s Lake Rod and Gun Club which he served as chairman of the board of directors and previously as president. He was an active youth mentor for hunts with Pheasants Forever and instructed a hunter safety course for the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

His love of hunting and fishing earned him the nickname 'Bear' as he ventured on many hunting expeditions throughout the United States and Canada during his lifetime. He was deeply saddened as his declining health prevented him from hunting this past fall.

His son, Daniel, died May 20, 1998.

Surviving are his wife, the former Grace Weber, children, Janice and her husband Richard Frank of Wilkes-Barre, Bernard and his wife Meg Suda of Wilkes-Barre and Michael and his wife Myrna Suda of Austin, Texas, grandchildren, Julie, Rich, Mark, Patrick and Ken Frank of Wilkes-Barre, step-grandchildren, Amy (Tom) Dempsey and Philip (Cara) Harmon, sister, Dolores and her husband Fred Klein of Wilkes-Barre, brothers, David and his wife Sharon Suda of Warrington and Raymond and his wife Tonee Suda of Wilkes-Barre, nieces, nephews and friends including his faithful companion, Schultz
