Kenneth W. Bird

Kenneth W. Bird, 98, of Wilkes-Barre peacefully passed away at Little Flower Manor on Wednesday, November 1, 2017.
Born July 20, 1919 in Scranton and raised in West Nanticoke he was a son of the late William and Bertha Williams Bird.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served in Italy. After the war he served in the Merchant Marines for several years.
Returning to the Wyoming Valley, Ken started his forty-year career as a carpenter and member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters.
A man of strong convictions, an avid reader, Civil War buff, lover of classical music, seeker of knowledge and a loyal husband, father, grandfather and friend; nothing gave him more joy, or made him more proud, than his family.
His wife, Joyce Hawkins Bird, died March 23, 2008 and a brother, Robert Bird, died June 15, 1997.
Ken will be greatly missed by his children, Betsy and her husband Jonathan Shafer of Wilkes-Barre, David and his wife Karen Bird of Bloomsburg, and Alan Bird of Wilkes-Barre; granddaughters, Amy Vieney, Alison Hightower and Jessica Bird-Bellis; great-grandchildren, Daija, Marcus, Sydnee, Bryce, Champ, Cameron, Davyd, Theodore and Aderyn; other family and friends.
Kenneth’s family extends thanks to the staff of Little Flower Manor and Dr. Patrick Kerrigan for the wonderful care they provided for him.
Celebration of Kenneth's Life will begin Sunday with visitation from 4 to 7 PM at McLaughlin's, 142 South Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre and continue on Monday with a Funeral Service at 11:00 AM. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to The Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic or the Mill Memorial Library in Nanticoke.
