Edmund J. Hahn, 80, of Wilkes-Barre died Thursday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Born July 29, 1935 in Wilkes-Barre he was a son of the late Louis M. and Mary Burke Hahn.
A graduate of G.A.R. Memorial High School, Ed served our country as a member of the 109th Field Artillery from 1955 to 1961.
A professional firefighter since 1963, Ed retired from the Wilkes-Barre Fire Department in 1999 after more than thirty-five years of service. He was secretary of the Wilkes-Barre Firemen's Pension Fund and served eighteen years as president of the Firefighters Union Local 104 for which he successfully fought for lifetime health insurance benefits for its members.
Ed was an active member of the Greater Wilkes-Barre Labor Council, serving on its Community Services Committee and executive board. He was also active with various committees and the board of directors of the United Way which awarded him the 1998 United Way Labor Award.
Ed was an annual participant in the Pennsylvania Senior Games and was an avid bowler who rolled thirteen sanctioned 300 games.
His wife, Barbara Girton Hahn died December 4, 2007. A sister, Theresa Vital also preceded him in death.
Ed will be greatly missed by his daughters, Nancy Hahn of Dallas and Suzanne and her husband Frank McHenry of Wilkes-Barre; grandchildren, Frank and his wife Jess McHenry of Tunkhannock and Rebecca McHenry of Wilkes-Barre; great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Frankie McHenry; sisters, : Roseann Dunay and Louise Usloski of Wilkes-Barre, Bernadette Banta of Trucksville and Mary Ann and her husband Daniel Oleniak of Ashley; sisters-in-law, June Opet and Shirley Glaser; nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Celebration of Ed’s Life will begin Sunday with visitation from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at McLaughlin’s, 142 South Washington Street in Wilkes-Barre and continue there on Monday with gathering at 9:30 AM followed by services at 10 AM led by Reverend John C. Major. Interment will be in Fern Knoll Burial Park.
